America's Christmas traditions started when a Wampanoag sachem, or tribal leader, named Massasoit welcomed a group of English settlers to his home in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Wampanoag people observed a daylong religious festival called "Firstfruits" on December 25th, which was part of their long-held belief that God created all things at the Earth's creation on this date. The English settlers celebrated with them as they shared food and gifts during these days celebrating what would eventually be known as "Christmas.
