科技論文解密筆記 - Structure and Organisation

為了完成論文寫作，於是參與在清華磨課師MOOCS開設的「科技論文解密」課程。本文為學習過程中的筆記。此筆記為Structure and Organisation部分。

IMRD Structure

以大方向而言，科技類論文的structure：Introduction -> Method -> Result -> Discussion (Conclusion)，有時候會把Result and Discussion放在一起進行討論，然後再寫一部分為Brief Discussion。

論文是給予同一領域（有時候會遇到其他領域）的學者／研究人員閱讀，在寫作時需留意以intentive readers的角度去思考需要在論文當中解釋或提供更詳細內容。

Introduction：解釋為什麼做這個research以及重要性。

Method：怎樣去找／用了什麼方法去找出這個research的答案、數據。

Result：在research的過程中找到了什麼（即答案）。

Discussion：為找出的答案賦予意義（meanings）及價值（valuable），此答案可以應用在什麼地方，對世界的貢獻。

寫作的思考方向

以下的章節分類（Ch.1 ~ 4）只是為方便而加上序號，可以按實際情況加以調整及分拆。

Ch. 1 Introduction - <Analytical>

在Ch. 1 Introduction當中，需要包含context、background、motivation、research question，其中research question是很重要的一項，讓readers知道作者想表達什麼。

Background -> Motivation -> Objective

• Why you are doing this research?
• Why is it important?（用related works及novely等表示，指出前人做過了什麼，但是仍存在什麼問題，所以自己打算怎麼改進）
• Why do your readers need to know this?
• 覺得readers還需要知道的內容
• Attracts interest in the topic.

Ch.2 Method - <Descriptive>

• How do you find the question?
• How to collect data?
• Research的過程（step-by-step）
• How to prove the design?（比以前的做得更好）
• How to test the proposed model / design?

Ch. 3 Result - <Descriptive>

DATA好重要！！！

• 在research當中找到了什麼？Research question的答案是什麼？
• 用表格式是圖表去展示data / evidences。

Ch.4 Discussion - <Analytical>

• 找到的result有什麼意義／價值？
• 不是把全部結果都在Disscussion，而是找出較為重要的，強調significant differences。
• Try to compare your result with others，比如XXX algorithm也是以做到YYY為目標，XXX algorithm與自己提出的成果有什麼不同，有什麼比較好？
• Address the issues pointed in Ch.1 Introduction.

寫作時需要注意文法及引用狀況等，在不同部分，相應出現的機率都不同。

e.g. (result) The results shown in Table 2 indicate that the three student groups showed significantly different patterns.

e.g. (introduction / research goal) To fill this gap in the literature and teaching practice, this study aims to investigate how language proficiency levels would affect learners' engagements in collaborative works.

e.g. (Method) A mixed-methods approach was adopted for a more comprehensive and holistic understanding of the complex learning context.

e.g. (Discussion!!!) This result is in accordance with the finding of previous studies, suggesting that pairs with one student of well-established ability may have favorable performance.
