P.S. After 5 years, my minor-thesis-turned-into book chapter is only one step away. Only one publishing requirement remains: to reprint the memes, I will need to acquire permissions from copyright holders.

五年之后(别问为什么),我的硕士论文距离出版仅剩一步之遥。找到上述迷母的”原作授权“。

This has proven to be difficult. These political memes are of sensitive nature. They are circulated against censorship. No obvious copyright holders. Announcing them may even cause harm. I've agreed to self-censor, despite my book chapter (and my whole life) argued against it.

这些并未商用的表情包,经历重重审查。现在我要像中国政府一样,追查他们的来源。我决定将所有图片从文中删除。

One further concerning issue for me is the assumption that everything is "ownable" and "heldable". The very origin of the internet was based on an open concept. Now we take digital enclosure for granted. Grafitti is being auctioned. Memes are sold as NTF. Arts researchers research without visuals images. Tech corporates feel free to panorama street views and 3D scan spatial data into commercial AR clouds.

在趋利避害的商业机制下,请善待人文学者。

If the creators/copyright holders of these memes are not happy, I will take these images down. If you are happy, feel free to have a chat.
