Flying Umbrellas: Everything You Need To Know

It pays to be careful to protect your safety while having fun whether you're at the beach, or on vacation. Learn more about injuries caused by flying umbrellas through the infographic below.

When one thinks of the beach, your mind may typically evoke images of the hot sun, crystal clear waters, refreshing drinks, and a fun day out. You certainly do not think of dangerous flying umbrellas. While that might sound a bit absurd, the reality is there have been cases of flying umbrella injuries and even fatalities. Mind you, these are reported cases.

Many might think that there is much more worthy stuff to be concerned about when taking a stroll on sandy beaches, like sea creatures, fellow vacationers, and, of course, the water itself. However, flying umbrellas are no laughing matter. Here are some cases that showcase the dangers of flying umbrellas.

Real Stories Regarding the Dangers of Flying Umbrellas

  • Ed Quigley (Delaware, U.S.A.)

In 2015, Ed Quigley was enjoying a fun day out at Bethany Beach with his family to celebrate the Fourth of July. Unfortunately, an accident would occur when a flying umbrella penetrated his left eye, causing severe damage to his brain.

The horrible accident resulted in eyesight and significant brain damage for Ed. The part of his brain responsible for basic senses like smell and taste had irreparable effects, significantly damaging the sensation he felt when consuming food and drinks.

He spoke to the BBC and stated that he was unaware of the thousands of reported flying umbrella-related injuries. Now, he devotes his time to spreading awareness regarding umbrella safety.

  • Margaret Reynolds (New Jersey, U.S.A.)

One afternoon in New Jersey, 67-year-old London-native Margaret Reynolds was on a beach located in Seaside Heights. Unfortunately, her vacation did not go according to plan, as an aluminum umbrella would completely penetrate her right ankle leaving her in tremendous pain.

Before she could be sent to the hospital, rescue crews had to sever portions of the umbrella connected to the frame to free her.

Fortunately, there was no significant damage to Margaret’s leg, and she was immediately brought to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, according to the Sun-Sentinel via WCBS. At the hospital, all Margaret could say was it was a beautiful day that turned into an unfortunate accident.

Meanwhile, Seaside Heights Police Chief Tommy Boyd did a demonstration for WCBS regarding umbrella safety. Instead of the twisting motion most beach-goers do when placing their umbrellas in the sand, Chief Boyd suggested a back-and-forth action with long strokes and strides.

Additionally, he encouraged owners to bury their umbrellas in at least 16-inches of sand to ensure that they are not easily taken away by a gust of wind.

Caution: Flying Umbrellas Pose Looming Dangers

Fortunately for the two victims, they lived to tell their stories. Their stories are only a couple of unfortunate accidents caused by flying umbrellas. More cases of the dangers of flying umbrellas ultimately result in casualties. But people could take simple steps to ensure these incidents do not happen to them.

If you want to know more about the potential dangers of flying umbrellas and how to prevent them, this infographic will provide everything you need to know.
