Doomsday Clock and Pale Blue Dot：Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand

Doomsday Clock，中文譯作：末日之鐘、末日鐘、末日時鐘、世界末日鐘，是一虛構鐘面，由美國芝加哥大學的《原子科學家公報》（Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists）雜誌於1947年設立，隱喻不受限制的科學技術發展對人類的威脅。 

該鐘每年一月進行一次評估，標示出世界距離毀滅的距離：午夜零時象徵世界末日來臨。雜誌社因應世界局勢將分針撥近或撥離子夜---以此提醒各界正視世界的問題。當前影響該鐘撥動的主要因素，就是核戰爭和全球暖化(氣候變化)，此外不可復原性的生物科技的發展也可能撥動該鐘。

美國已故科學家Carl Sagan曾經指出世界的三大問題：Global Warming、Nuclear Winter、Ozone depletion，而加來道雄(日裔美國籍理論物理學家、未來學家、科普家)則在其書《2050科幻大成真》提醒大家，核戰及生化細菌及病毒(Covid-19正是今天最大問題！)，亦係兩大可能導致末日鐘向著午夜進發！

2020年1月23日，該雜誌撥快末日鐘20秒 ，離子夜僅1分40秒，係離午夜最接近的一次。今年1月23日再次持平：離子夜僅1分40秒！主要因為綜合考慮各國早期對2019冠狀病毒病疫情的輕視及延後性的反應，SARS-CoV2變異的風險，全球性的對科學家意見的忽視及對陰謀論的追捧，各國對核武器的進一步研究和開發及俄羅斯和美國間核裁軍的進行等因素後。

筆者認為，我們都是地球人，都是「人類命運共同體」；Carl Sagan所寫過的一篇散文，值得我們一讀再讀：《黯淡的藍點》（Pale Blue Dot）

再看一下這個點吧。

That's here. That's home. That's us.

它在那裡。那就是我們的家，我們的一切。

On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives.

在它上面，有你愛的每個人、你認識的每個人、你聽說過的每個人。歷史上的每一個人，都在它上面度過了自己的一生。

The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there--on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena.

地球是宇宙競技場中的一個小舞臺。

Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot.

那些將軍和帝王，那些成敗和榮辱，那些血流成河，那些霸業和輝煌，不過只發生在這個點上的一部分地區，轉瞬即逝。

Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.

Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light.

Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark.

In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.

The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life.

There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate.

Visit, yes. Settle, not yet.

訪問其他星球，可以做到。定居在那裡，沒有可能。

Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand.

不管是否接受，目前地球是我們僅有的立足之地。

It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience.

There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world.

也許這張表現我們的世界是如何渺小的照片，是人類愚蠢自負的最好證明。

To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.
