Online Courses Are Replacing the Classrooms

Computer programs enable the institutions to save on costs such as healthcare, pay raises, professional development, and retirement benefits that are demanded by employees. In addition, educating students off campus saves institutions the cost of the brick-and-motor structures, as well as maintenance costs. The low costs ensure that the programs offered are affordable to the end users.

E-learning has a higher accessibility and flexibility than the conventional modes of learning. A student can access it anywhere and anytime provided that he or she can access a device that is connected to the internet. The flexibility allows learners to set their own study times and avoid constraints that usually characterize classroom learning with regards to set times and locations. Companies require effective and efficient methods of training to ensure that employees are well equipped with advanced skills and the latest information. E-learning has, in the past few years, emerged as a promising solution to on-the-job workforce training and lifelong learning. Mostly, learners who are on employment and may not have time to attend regular classes prefer e-learning programs.

In addition, e-learning has proved to be effective and interesting for most students. In face-to-face classrooms, learning is centered on instructors rather than the students. The instructors control the learning process and class content. On the other hand, e-learning provides a self-centered environment. However, the gains from e-learning do not imply that the model of learning is replacing classroom learning. In essence, learning is largely a socio-cognitive activity. Therefore, not every student will consider e-learning as a suitable model for her or his learning style.

E-learning environments are unable provide the real life that students experience in campus. Therefore, a number of students prefer to take their studies in traditional classrooms, even if they have the opportunity to choose e-learning. Some students regard studying before a computer as either boring or intimidating and would, therefore, not resort to it. This is irrespective of how effective it may be. In addition, e-learning requires more self-discipline, as well as maturity, from students as compared to traditional education. Students who cannot work unless instructed may fail to attend to his or her studies. The need of input from students alone explains why e-learning experiences higher dropouts than conventional programs.

E-learning also has logistical issues that are of concern to educators. For example, e-learning demands more time from facilitators with regards to preparation for teaching. Moreover, particular types of learning materials might be too costly or too difficult to be taught online.
