Why do you Need to be Consistent in Writing, and how to Develop it?

Do you want to establish your career as a successful writer? Then be prepared to be consistent in your writing style.

Hire a Ghostwriter, have one thing in common: they are consistent in their writing. When you read an unnamed passage somewhere, you can recognize the writer just by reading what they have written.

Developing your writing style helps your readers to recognize and remember you. Likewise, they can connect and empathize with your storytelling. Regardless of your writing purpose, you still want to stand out amid the crowd and want to craft a beautiful and compelling story. How are you going to that is a separate topic of discussion, but you need to realize that consistency of ideas and style is essential in writing.

To give you an example, growing up, I read Charles Dickens a lot, which made me acquainted with his writings. I knew that Charles Dicken is one of those writers you found critiquing the hard-core money mindset, hypocrisy in the Victorian era, and the Industrial revolution.

Most of Dicken's characters lived in a world where people lose their human touch and become misanthropists; children are forced into labor because of the Industrial Revolution; the poor are stripped of their rights to live while those who did not need anything were dressed in jollity. This loss of innocence and the world of experience emerged as a constant theme in his writings. He reflected his views in extraordinary stories, but he also developed his writing style that relied on metaphor, simile, repetitions, exaggerations, and detailed descriptions. When you read his work, you will see a remarkable difference in writing style from his contemporaries.

His writing style made him irreplaceable, still being one of the widely read authors. Even though Charles Dickens was writing in the Victorian era, you may still want to learn from him. Consider the famous opening of his novel A Tale of Two Citiesin which he presents a complete dichotomy of emotional state:

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way."

Are you able to figure out his style just from this paragraph? Mention it in the comment section.

Other benefits may include:

  1. Elimination of the reader and writer's communication barrier
  2. Effective communication
  3. Maintains the flow of your writings
  4. It helps you convey your message in your unique voice
  5. Makes your content memorable

How to Develop Consistency?

In the above paragraphs, I mentioned why it is essential to develop consistency by giving you Charles Dickens' example. Now let's talk about how to create it in your writing?

Voice: Voice refers to selecting the vocabulary, how you say things, narration, dictions, and spellings. Maintaining your voice will help you infuse your personality into your writings. When you can consistently use your original tone of voice, your readers will relate to the subject and understand its importance. Moreover, by using your voice, you signal your readers that such and such a matter needs particular attention, and it needs to be discussed more often. Think of all the literature's geniuses; they could divert the reader's attention toward a specific topic and make people take action just by using their voice.

Tone: It refers to the writer's attitude toward the topic, subject, and message. Your tone will define how the character or the message is going to be perceived by the readers. This technique helps in character formation and points out feelings that could be optimistic, assertive, aggressive, or informal. Equally, to keep your work consistent, you need to focus on your tone and decide the targeted audience in the earlier writing stages. This way, you will be able to maintain the reliability of your story.

Style refers to the words and phrases constructions in the text —how text is aligned, what structure is used, dialect, register, grammar, literary, and figurative language elements. It assists in creating concrete imagery, establishes mood as well as creates clarity of the meanings. Having a distinctive writing style gives you an edge over others in writing, and people can connect to your texts once they see them.
