Popular and free social networking apps

Between Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, WhatsApp and more, it's hard to remember that there are any other social networking apps out there. But if you're looking for something different than the usual suspects when it comes to your tech-based interactions with the world at large - or you simply want to find a new app for managing social media or messaging

Snapchat

This app is for sending photos, videos, and other content to certain other users you've chosen to follow. It's got a similar "game" feel to Facebook, where friends are "snapped" when they send one another a photo.

Instagram

Another photo sharing app where you can follow your friends' photos you're interested in seeing. This is probably the most popular of all the photo-sharing apps out there. You can use Instagram via your own web browser or by downloading it on your smart phone or tablet device. And if you have Instagram accounts on both Facebook and Instagram, I'd advise logging in with each login so that your photos are being uploaded to both accounts at the same time.

Google+

This is Google's attempt to compete with Facebook. It's a smart idea, and you'll find a lot of familiar features here that rival the big name social networking apps. You can follow people, but you can't browse through random feeds like you would with Facebook or Instagram. It's worth a try if you're looking for something new on social media.

This app is a little different from the others - it's actually a messaging app. You can send text messages, photos, videos and even voice messages to anyone who has the app. The interface is spartan but functional. It also works with your phone's microphone so that you can sing into it! You can also use Whatsapp Plus to call someone or call them back for free. This will be really helpful if you live in Europe, where calls are typically expensive!

Facebook Messenger

It's no wonder this one is so popular. Facebook has made it easy to connect with your friends on mobile devices using this messaging app. Like the other messaging apps, you can send photos, videos and voice recordings - but you can't browse through your friends' photo albums.
