Build a Brand in Web 3

This material is a continuation of my article about Web 3 Social.

If you haven't read the first article yet, I suggest you start there and then go back to this article about Building a Brand.

1. What is a brand and why is it so important

It is hard to underestimate the importance of brands these days.

We are surrounded by brands, they are everywhere, in every sector of the economy, whether it is science, politics, education, medicine, services, goods or technology.

It is hard to imagine a world without brands.

A brand can be thought of as a composite of opinions, ideas, impressions, emotions, images, characteristics, and reputation associated with an entity or a group of entities.

Brands have an effect on us, they sway us, they infiltrate our thoughts, they shape our decisions, and they largely dictate our lives.

I will not take sides on whether this is a beneficial or detrimental trend; everyone must make their own conscious choice on whether or not to accept the status quo.

For my own part, I'm all in.

2. Examples of existing Web 3 brands

2.1 Cryptocurrency brands

The first and most obvious is Bitcoin.
Bitcoin is the main brand of the Web 3 world and has many loyal followers all around the world and from very diverse social circles.
A whole philosophy has emerged around bitcoin, bitcoin is not just a cryptocurrency, not just a technology, not just the foundation of the Web 3 world.
Bitcoin has become a religion.
It is a powerful weapon, and the most amazing thing is that we don’t know who created it.

2.2 Venture Capital Brands

A16z is one of the most illustrious venture capital firms, endowed with both a high degree of financial capital as well as a powerful social presence.
A16z's involvement in a project instantly imparts to it a tremendous degree of respectability, elevates its public awareness, and attracts other investors.
This venture capital also actively engages in educational and media activities, such as offering tutorial programs, podcasts, informative articles, and analyses.
A16z is the trendsetter of the industry

2.3. Community Brands

Speaking of the community, I should mention the Nouns DAO.
The Nouns DAO is a sterling example of a strong community brand.
Its most distinguishing feature is the NFTs with square glasses, which have become an emblem of sorts for the DAO.
Major figures on Twitter have gone so far as to set these NFTs as their profile pictures, creating an atmosphere of selective exclusivity and luring new members with the desire to be part of the DAO.

2.4 Personal Brand

And, of course, the perfect example of a strong personal brand is Vitalik Buterin, the co-creator of Ethereum.
His incredible success has attracted millions of followers, who will undoubtedly stand by him no matter the endeavor.
He is a testament to the fact that it’s ok to be weird and different, to be unconventional, and to remain true to one's own self.
And being a genius definitely helps a lot.

3. Brand building, Web 3 platforms and tools

The open digital world is emerging before our eyes.

We have completed the formation of the essential infrastructure (which, naturally, will continue to be improved in the future) and we have moved on to the next stage of constructing an open social system.

An exponential development of crypto brands, likely analogous to what we witness in the physical world, lies ahead.

Rather than composing a guiding handbook on how to construct a brand, I will rather highlight a few fundamental concepts to set you off.

A few simple ideas to get you started:

  • Register a memorable domain that will remain consistent across all social networks.
  • Balance your actions, don't go to extremes.
  • The desire for total control over your brand and people who work with you must be balanced by freedom and flexibility, non-interference, and the ability to go with the flow.
  • This is a fundamental issue that is very common in life, from parenting to the different systems of government.
  • Acknowledge these multifaceted issues, do not micro-manage the mundane, you must be able to become a spectator and steer the disorder in the right direction at the right time.
  • Work in different languages (the ability to promote in Russian and Chinese would be great), don't limit yourself to the audience of one single culture.
  • Don't be scared if you don't know the foreign language well enough!
  • Do not neglect your visual style.
  • Come up with an extraordinary logo and visual language, pay close attention to the blend of colors and brand acknowledgement.
  • For example, here is a nice design made by a member of our community.

And remember, your story and your personal journey should be unique.
I did not attempt to duplicate the ideas of others or create a stringent visual scheme from the beginning, everything develops naturally and as a part of the creative process.

Crypto Girls - is my way of exploring myself, accepting my imperfections, my peculiarities, the desire to open up to the world.
My energy attracts like-minded people who want to develop and express themselves together. This is how the Crypto Girls Community comes into being a reality.

Another note, gender is not important for our community, we want to maintain a common vibe of self-development, support, and the idea of equality for people of all genders.

Next, I will write about protocols/tools that can help you to build your own successful brand.
The competition and saturation in Web2 is very high, so my main focus is on Web3 protocols and social media.
Your brand will grow together with the success of the Web3 Social ecosystem.

3.1 Lens Protocol and Ecosystem

First you have to create a Lensfrens profile that will work as an access point and the default profile for all applications of the Lens Protocol.
Don’t forget to choose a beautiful domain and memorable design.
We use the Lenster website for publishing from the desktop or laptop.


And you can use the Orb app to access the ecosystem from your smartphone.

Publish new posts regularly, mass subscribe to other users (people will subscribe in return), over time you will gain followers and the protocol will start to promote your profile, building the momentum.
We've been growing our Crypto Girls account since the summer of 2022 and I can already see the results of our hard work.
We have strong engagement from our community, a steady growth in likes and comments.
Projects offer to promote their products, give us whitelists, provide access to various testnet programs.
Lens followers are subscribing to our Twitter and other social network profiles.
Keep an eye on new projects building their products with Lens protocol, they are interested in onboarding new active users and rewarding them later.
Look for new tools that help with promotion, optimize your work.

3.2 Farcaster and Ecosystem

Farcaster and Lens are the best social protocols that are actively growing communities and various projects.
Sign up for Farcaster using the main mobile app.

The format of Farcaster is similar to Twitter and involves posting short messages. Posting images is also possible.
Keep an eye out for new applications built on Farcaster.
Some of them can help with promotion, for example Launchcaster.

The Launchcaster allows you to pin the best posts and reach the top recommended to extra attention from users and get new followers.

3.3. Mirror, Paragraph, Xlog

For longer publications, use Web3 publishing platforms (the most popular one is Mirror).

First of all, by doing so you will leave your mark on the Web3 and create a permanent record in the distributed database.
The tools to index and search for information stored on the blockchain are already starting to appear (I wrote more about these tools in the article about Web 3 Search, read it HERE )
And second, the use of Web3 services is valued by builders and developers who can become your partners in the future.

Another increasingly popular Web3 publishing platform is Paragraph.

Paragraph is integrated with Unlock Protocol and is focused on building deeper relationships with the community, encouraging active readers, and sending them exclusive content.
It's a relatively new platform, so it's easier to get to the top and there's some hope for future airdrops as well.
I also want to mention the xlog, as a central part of the rss3 ecosystem.

It is not well known, but the functionality is very similar to Mirror and there is an opportunity to quickly go viral and get noticed by the developers (xlog team has already contacted us and thanked us for the content).
Get busy and stay active in all ecosystems.
If possible, use multiple publishing platforms, increase your Web3 presence and build your brand by spreading the reach.
Finally, I want to mention a cool tool that Mirror provides - the ability to collect articles in the NFT format (in Paragraph this feature is in test mode right now).
You can set total NFT supply and the cost of the mint, thereby getting donations and using the NFT to engage with your community.

4. Engaging with the community

The community is the brand's followers, loyal subscribers who are interested and invested in your brand.
Web3 allows you to create a strong and coherent community that is not limited to a single social platform.
You can connect and engage with the community, link it and grow by spreading your influence all over the digital world.
These are the tools to help you organize this abstraction into something more structured, connected and manageable.

4.1 Guild.xyz

Pay attention to the projects that are integrating with the Guild.

The list is growing all the time.
You can use the Guild.xyz as an anchor point and build the logic of engaging with the community based on the integrations of different services.
For example, you can create a special role in Discord for those users who collected NFT of your article published on Mirror.

This way you will stimulate the support for your activities, identify the most active and loyal followers and get the opportunity to reward them not only with a special role, but also, for example, with access to unique gated content, NFT and token drops, and so on.

4.2 Unlock protocol

Another important project integrated with Guild.xyz is the Unlock Protocol.

It allows you to create and maintain communication with users and followers using NFTs. Unlock Protocol, integrates with other Web3 applications such as Paragraph (a publishing platform) and, for example, Tropee.

You can create a membership contract using the Unlock Protocol and regulate the distribution of unique content to selected members of your community using Tropee or Paragraph.

5. Conclusion

Protocols and platforms that will help you to grow and develop the Web3 brand are just beginning to emerge.
There is no clearly established way to grow and expand the community, all the tools are very abstract and will change in the future.
On the one hand, it makes your life difficult and uncertain.
On the other hand, you have a unique opportunity to be one of the early builders, and find a good place in the emerging ecosystem.

The strength of a project is determined by the number of integrations and partnerships.
The strength of a brand depends on the number and quality of social connections.
Don't forget that there are real people behind the nicknames and avatars.
Meeting a community in real life is a great opportunity to make it stronger.
